“WASHINGTON, Dec. 23, 2003—Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has diagnosed a presumptive positive case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in an adult Holstein cow in the state of Washington.” (www.usda.gov)

Some consumers may be concerned about the consumption of beef and bovine-derived products due to this recent report.  In anticipation of concerns, Proper Nutrition has prepared the following statements regarding the two relevant ingredients used in the manufacture of its products:

1.  Bovine colostrum

The bovine colostrum powder used in Proper Nutrition products is produced from pure bovine-origin colostrum liquid collected from controlled, healthy Grade A dairy herds of U.S. origin.  These dairy herds are fed diets free of animal products.  The colostrum is produced in state-of-the-art, licensed and USDA-registered facilities located in Washington and California in conjunction with La Belle, Inc.

BSE is not transmissible through lacteal secretions (colostrum, milk, milk products), and there is no scientific data or even theory to suggest the possibility that BSE can be transmitted into dairy products.  The United Kingdom outbreak saw numerous government agencies and universities conducting studies that cleared lacteal secretions from being possible vectors for BSE transmission.

2.  Gelatin capsules

The gelatin capsules utilized in the production of Proper Nutrition products are manufactured in Korea from U.S.-origin bovine (calf) and porcine (pig) skin and are certified BSE-free by the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA).  Bovine hides are not considered a specific risk material (SRM) for BSE.  There is no chance of contamination by skull, spinal cord, or vertebrae in the raw material, and no bone material is used in production of the gelatin capsules.  Should an unforeseen change in capsule supplier alter these conditions, all customers will be notified.

Proper Nutrition and La Belle do not expect any interruption in our servicing any product needs.  Through Good Manufacturing Practices, we guarantee that every precaution has been taken to supply safe, clean products to all customers.
