History: Sallai guggal is the traditional Ayurvedic name for the gum resin of the Boswellia serrata tree. Ayurvedic practitioners regard this preparation as an effective therapy for a number of inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and cervical spondylitis (an inflammatory arthritic condition of the spine). In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, boswellia has also been administered to treat chronic lung conditions, diarrhea, and menstrual disorders.
